medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Terri Morgan <[log in to unmask]>
>>> Adela of Blois (d. 1137) Adela was the youngest daughter
of William the Conqueror and Mathilda.
>> on what does this entry in our precious Saint o'the Day rest?
> The entry was in Phyllis' Feb 24, 2004 column and (I assume) came from "The
Book of Saints: A comprehensive biographical dictionary". Edited by Basil
Watkins. 7th ed. (New York: Continuum, 2002) as that was her source for
that round of entries.
> Further than that I know not.
is the Adela entry indeed in Watkins?
as i said, i've never seen it proposed in any of the secondary Chartrain
sources i'm familiar with.
seems to me that the very Principle of Inclusion in our Saintly List of
Saintly folks is at issue here.
if Adela qualifies (and on what ecclesiastical/historical basis?), we're on a
Slippery Slope which might lead to, i don't know, child-abuse-enabling Popes
to qualify simply because they had nice smiles.
