medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Saturday's ODNB Life of the Day was AD Carr's biography of Llywelyn ab
Iorwerth [called Llywelyn Fawr] (c.1173-1240), prince of Gwynedd. While
chiefly of interest for Welsh political history, it includes mention of
canon law re legitimate marriage, charters to Cistercians, Gerald of Wales,
the capture of the bishop of Bangor by King John, Innocent III's and
Honorius III's part in English/Welsh politics, foundation of Llanfaes
Franciscan Friary, becoming a Cistercian on deathbed, patronage of
Cistercians and Augustinians - all enlivened by a case of adultery and a
poisoning of a husband by his wife.
