medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. September) is the feast day of:
Priscus of Capua (c. 66?) According to legend, Priscus was a disciple of
St. Peter. He was sent by Peter to Capua, where he became the first
bishop. He is supposed to have been martyred during the reign of Nero.
Verena (mid 4th cent.) Verena is one of the most-honored saints in
Switzerland. According to legend, she was connected to the Theban Legion,
and after their martyrdom went to Solothurn or Zurzach in what is now
Switzerland. There she cared for the poor and sick, and converted many to
Christianity.
Regulus of Populonia (d. 542) According to legend, Regulus was a bishop
who fled from Africa to Tuscany because of Arian persecution, where he was
beheaded by emissaries of Totila.
Drithelm (d. c. 700) The English Drithelm converted to the monastic life
when he recovered from a deathly illness. He divided his goods equally
between his wife, his sons, and the poor, and lived for the rest of his
life at the monastery of Melrose.
Aegidius (Giles) (d. c. 720) Aegidius was possibly a Greek. He lived as a
hermit near Arles, later founding the monastery that was later named
St-Gilles after him. In the Middle Ages his tomb in the monastic church
was a famous pilgrimage stop on the way to Compostela. Aegidius is one of
the 14 Holy Helpers. He was excluded from the Roman reformed calendar in
1969.
Juliana di Collatlo (blessed) (d. 1262) Juliana was born in 1186 near
Treviso in northern Italy. At the age of ten, at her own wish she became a
Benedictine nun. She later became an abbess in Padua, then after 1226
founded the content of SS. Biagio e Cataldo in Venice, where she was abbess
until her death. Her local cult was approved in the eighteenth century by
Pope Benedict XIV.
