Two AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD studentships in the Department
of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, University of Glasgow
The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University
of Glasgow is seeking to award two fully funded PhD studentships to
commence 1 October 2007. The studentships, each of which will support
three years of full-time study, are funded through the AHRC Collaborative
Doctoral Awards Scheme and are with non-academic partners The Arches
Theatre and Children’s BBC in Scotland, both of which are based in Glasgow.
1. Film and Television Studies and BBC Scotland
Children’s television at BBC Scotland: diversity, representation and
interactivity
This studentship has been set up to investigate issues of diversity and
representation in relation to children’s television at BBC Scotland. With
the increasing ‘roll out’ of interactive and online technologies within
the BBC’s own provision an important aspect of the project will be to
explore how public service values can be imagined and practiced within the
new media environment. The research will involve textual analysis,
production studies and audience research. The academic supervisor will be
Dr. Karen Lury (University of Glasgow) and the non-academic supervisor
will be Simon Parsons (Head of Children’s Television at BBC Scotland.)

2. Theatre Studies and Arches Theatre
‘Underneath the Arches’: developing a relational aesthetic in response to
a specific cultural site
This studentship is available to carry out critically informed practical
research that responds to The Arches as a historical, cultural, and
geographical site, and which makes performance work for that site. The
project aims to evolve new critical and creative knowledge for engaging
with cultural venues as specific sites that have multiple functions. The
academic supervisor will be Dr Deirdre Heddon, with the non-academic
supervisors being Andy Arnold (Artistic Director) and Jackie Wylie (Arts
Programmer).
