Hi Danny
The Kiosk app and a mount that stops access to buttons sounds like the generic answer.
Not sure who made them, but these girder-like ipad mounts from the Rijksmuseum were really sturdy and lovely to touch. They were in a nautical gallery so the solid nature felt right. You could try contacting the museum.

This company is US based and I think has Museum examples of cases
http://www.ipadenclosures.com/
No idea if they are any good though!
It would be good to know if anyone has tried pimping a case by mashing up a secure case with an object from their collections. That would be cool
You can get base 3d models on Thingyverse like this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:233147 it would be way cooled with hand rests shaped like this:

In Wellcome, you must have all sorts of awesome medical kit that could be used

Hi Danny
We've used iPads in the museum and in exhibitions to host videos and link to websites.
To restrict visitor access we use the Kisosk Pro App.
In some locations we use ready made mounts from Bounce Pad and in exhibitions our fit out team make a bespoke plinth to fit the look and feel of the exhibition.
Only problems since starting this in 2012 were a battery needing replacing (£85) and the first bespoke plinth didn't quite get the right angle to make the iPad display in landscape!

Preserving PDF: identify, validate, repair
1-2 September 2014
German National Library of Economics, Hamburg
Registration for our next event is now open at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/preserving-pdf-identify-validate-repair-registration-12203790867.
OPF members are invited to attend free-of-charge (please use the code issued to your main point of contact at your organisation). Non-members are welcome at the rate of €150.
Overview
This event will focus on the PDF file format. Participants are encouraged to contribute requirements, for instance sample files with errors or anomalies for investigation. Currently available identification and validation tools will be demonstrated, with the opportunity to compare results using your own collections and identify gaps for future development.
OPF members have identified specific tasks for the event:
-check the validity of the files and whether they are encrypted; -perform quality assurance checks after migration, using comparison tools; -investigate error messages, repair the problems, and build a knowledge base; and -document and improve open source tool functionality e.g. JHOVE validation.
There will also be discussion sessions, and the opportunity to share experiences with peer organisations.
Olaf Drümmer, Chairman of the PDF Association, will present the work of the ISO standards body, including efforts related to PDF and PDF/A, and share the industry perspective on tool development.
Who should attend?
Collection owners with a responsibility to preserve PDFs. Bring along your problem files!
Developers interested in hacking PDF identification and validation tools.
Why attend?
-learn about PDF and PDF/A standards
-document and prioritise known preservation problems with PDF files -assess state of the art identification and validation tools -test the tools on sample files and compare the results -define organisational requirements and policies for conformance -identify requirements for future development work (road-mapping) -help improve current PDF tools (hacking)
Agenda
The agenda can be seen at: http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/KB/2014-09-01+Preserving+PDF+-+identify%2C+validate%2C+repair.

Hi Danny,
Sorry I can't send an image.
We have suspended iPads in bespoke Perspex and steel holders with padded handles. The front Perspex layer has a carefully positioned rectangular hole for visitor interaction but also covers the home button.
Our Augmented Reality project needed visitors to focus on a marker then manoeuvre iPads 360 degrees, hence the cables.
In this image visitors could also move between 2 markers and change their viewing position.
The central of the 3 suspension cables also has a power lead bound to it.All cables have white sheaths to ensure visitors don't walk into them.
Our focus group thought that this might be important as our gallery is quite dark.
It has taken considerable time to resolve and arrive at a design solution. As minimal as possible but also secure(theft proof)as possible and suitable for wide range of visitor heights.
Also positioned in prime locations to entice visitors to use.
Renting iPads was not a viable option at our site.
The weight of them is a slight issue for some visitors with some difficulties when they have to interact with screen while holding up.Oh and we have had one child swing on it!
All are welcome to come to our free Open Day Sept 5th to try out and see the project in action.

Hi Danny
In terms of ipad mounts, we found this supplier (http://www.forestav.co.uk/secure-ipad-mounts) to be really good quality and good value too. Fast delivery as well.
Compared to far more expensive housing we'd used in gallery installations before, they perform better and cost about a third of the price.
All the best
