We are delighted to announce that Abi Alayo and Frances Tout will be joining us early in 2016 to jointly host our next CILIP International Library & Information Group (ILIG) Informal! Both recently returned from working visits to libraries in the USA and are keen to share what they have learnt from their contrasting experiences. This will also be an opportunity to pick up tips on what is involved in undertaking a study tour; from the process of securing funding to the practicalities of undertaking international visits.
Frances Tout was the recipient of the Travelling Librarian Award 2015, jointly sponsored by CILIP and the English-Speaking Union. She works as a Community Librarian for North Somerset Library Services and used the Award to discover how libraries can use the spaces which they offer in new ways, enabling communities to share their talents, knowledge and ideas with one another. Frances's trip included visits to the Bronx Library Centre in New York, the Free Library of Philadelphia and Chattanooga Public Libraries. More information about her travels can be found on the Travelling Librarian Blog: https://travellinglibrarian2015.wordpress.com/. You can also follow her on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/francestout (@FrancesTout)
Abi Alayo also secured sponsorship from CILIP and the English-Speaking Union as a result of having applied for the Travelling Librarian Award. She toured health libraries in the Greater Midwest Region of the USA to find out how information about service provision is communicated from national to regional and local levels. She compared this to the ways health information is being shared in the UK in the context of the new Knowledge for Healthcare Framework (http://hee.nhs.uk/wp-content/blogs.dir/321/files/2014/12/Knowledge-for-healthcare-framework.pdf). Her blog about the tour is available at: http://k4hstudytour.blogspot.co.uk/. Twitter: https://twitter.com/abombolo (@abombolo)
We expect this event will be particularly useful to anyone thinking of applying for this year's Travelling Librarian Award. Details of the Award can be accessed here: http://www.cilip.org.uk/cilip/membership/membership-benefits/careers-advice-and-support/grants-and-bursaries/travelling.
The event also relates to the following areas of CILIP's Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB):
2.7 Knowledge sharing and collaboration
9.3 Advocacy 9.5 Partnership Development
11.4 Service innovation, development, and design
12.5 Communication skills 12.6 Networking skills
ILIG Informals are not lectures; they are informal, but informative, early evening meetings with a short talk on a theme of international interest plus plenty of time for questions and networking. They are open to all and absolutely free. Light refreshments are served which is why we ask you to let ILIG know you are coming by booking online (no later than January 11th 2016) at: http://tinyurl.com/ppholg9.
