LOYD GROSSMAN, VICTOR GRAY, KAREN KNIGHT AND MARK
WOOD ARE APPOINTED TO THE MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES
COUNCIL
Culture Secretary Chris Smith today announced the appointments of
Loyd Grossman, Victor Gray, Karen Knight and Mark Wood as members of
the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLAC). The appointments
are for a term of four years with effect from 5 January 2000.
This first round of appointments will allow the MLAC Board to begin
to make decisions about the structure and work programme of this new
strategic body. Further appointments will follow shortly.
Culture Secretary, Chris Smith, said :
"The appointment of four such high-calibre individuals is extremely
promising for MLAC. The breadth and depth of experience which they
bring to the Board will be invaluable, and I am confident that they
will work with energy and commitment to define the structure and
priorities of the new body."
Biographical Notes
Loyd Grossman is a high profile writer and broadcaster with wide
experience of the media and communications sector. He has a keen
interest in museums, and is currently a commissioner for the Museums
and Galleries Commission, a post he has held since 1995. He is the
Chairman of the Campaign for Museums and the Chairman of Museums and
Galleries Month 2000. In addition, he is an English Heritage
Commissioner, and Chairman of the Conservation Awards.
Victor Gray is the Head of Corporate Records and Archives at
N.M. Rothschild and Sons Limited. He is highly regarded within the
archives world and beyond. He holds the posts of Chairman of the
National Council on Archives, the National Networking Policy Group
for Archives and has taken the lead in the recent establishment of
regional archives councils in England.
Karen Knight is the Director of Reading Museums and Archive Service.
Her experience in the museums world is wide, ranging from researcher
to curator, and from development officer to head of Public Services.
She is a member of the Museums Association and of the International
Council of Museums. In 1999, she was appointed to both the Heritage
Lottery Fund Expert Panel, and to the Museum Association Ethics
Committee. She also sits on the DCMS working group looking at social
inclusion in museums.
Mark Wood is Editor in Chief of Reuters Plc, a post he has held since
1989, with responsibility for worldwide news production for
financial, media and online markets in 22 languages. He has
unparalleled experience at the forefront of this ever-developing
field. He has also been Chairman of ITN since 1998, and is overseeing
the implementation of a strategy to take ITN into the digital TV age.
He is currently Chair of the Library and Information Commission.
None of the candidates has undertaken political activities in the
last five years.
Notes to Editors
1. Appointments to the Commission (other than the Chairman) are
unpaid but travel and subsistence expenses incurred in attending
meetings or otherwise in the discharge of Commission business are
reimbursed.
2. The role of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLAC)
will be to provide strategic advice on issues affecting the
museums, libraries and archives sector to the Secretary of State
for Culture, Media and Sport, and to the sector. It will replace
the Museums and Galleries Commission and the Library and
Information Commission, and will become fully operational on
1 April 2000.
3. Appointments to the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council are
made by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under
the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council Memorandum of
Understanding. The Council will normally have fifteen members,
including the Chairman, though the number may vary as
circumstances require.
