Dear Dave (an' all),
Having travelled to Gotha a few times, since 1990s, for cartographic events, I have latterly found a return flight to Frankfurt am Main (a financial and transport 'hot spot'/'junction' - hence more cheaper air fares), and then DB train to Gotha via Fulda and (a 'Bach town') Eisenach, quite convenient. A couple of times return has been via a longer north-westward route - due to diversions - but that, in part compensation, brings in the DB's ICE [InterCityExpress] trains to F/M . . .
I can't comment on the 'Eastern Approaches' (i.e. flights to Leipzig, or - again more frequent and cheaper - to Berlin; then west by train to Gotha).
There are a couple of good hotels chez whom I've guested: depends on your finances; Gotha is a very self-contained town, so no great walking distances involved. It's also very handy to stay in other nearby 'Bach' towns (e.g. Erfurt) served by the regular and cheaper W - E train line. Or even Weimar (and, futher east, Jena) . . .

Subject : MAGIC Conference, Gotha, Germany - 8-9 Oct 18
Dear All,
(Lis-maps first timer, hope the questions below conform to group
protocol). If not apologies. Is anyone else from the UK considering
going to this conference? If so, any travel/accommodation recommendations?
Many thanks
Dave Watt
