General: A new MSc degree in Earth Science Practice and Management will be
presented from the year 2000 onwards. The purpose of the degree is to allow
scientists to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills to
facilitate planning and management of exploration, mining and other
minerals business projects that conform to financial and technical
requirements of the industry and legal framework of the relevant country.
The course consists of theoretical modules and a treatise. Subjects include
mineral deposits mineral economics, and mineral evaluation, mining,
metallurgy, mining law, transport logistics, project management,
negotiation skills, project accounting and research methodology.
The post advertised is a full Professorship in the Department of Earth
Science (http://www.up.ac.za/science/geology) and the incumbent will become
a member of a motivated team of earth scientists, teaching and support
staff. He/she shall manage and lead the MSc course, and teach in the fields
of mineral deposits, mineral economics and mineral deposit evaluation. The
incumbent will also be responsible for the course logistics as well as
liaison with students and other lecturers. Active research in a
minerals-related field will be expected. Private consultation work is
allowed under given conditions.
Requirements: PhD in Economic Geology and/or Mineral Economics or related
fields; MSc may be acceptable if extensive experience and success in
Economic Geology and/or Mineral Economics are proven. Extensive
international experience in economic geology and/or mineral economics, and
the evaluation of mineral occurrences are preferable. Organizational
skills, knowledge of financial analysis of ore deposits and good teaching
skills will be strong recommendations.
