Explicitly "deep" philosophy in movies:
I wasn't intending this as a reply-all, but it appears it sort of must be.
There are lots of films featuring philsophes doing their
non-analytical free association routine, although some of these are
not necessarily film films (i.e., to relate this to the Zizou
discussion, 'cinema'). I know Derrida crops up in a couple of docos,
including his own...
But, in terms of films about philosophers (as vaguely per
Wittgenstein), you might also add Iris (Richard Eyre).
Discussions of philosophy abound in films, but ones I have enjoyed
(but which might not count as deep philosophy on film) include Denys
Arcand's films (Invasions barbares and Le Déclin de l'empire
américain) and the Woody Allen finding-himself movies. I might also
make reference to the Bruce's Philosophers' Drinking Song in Monty
Python...
Since we're on the topic, anyone up for making an adaptation of The
Symposium? I see the cast list as follows:
Socrates - David Hasselhoff
Alcibiades - Bud Cort
Aristophanes - Melvin Gibson
Eryximachus - Leslie Nielsen
Pausanias - Hilary Swank
Phaedrus - Heath Ledger
Agathon - John Cameron Mitchell
Aristodemus - T(he) Cruise(r)
Apollodorus - Pruitt Taylor Vince
Diotima - Ellen Burstyn
