RESEARCH ASSISTANT, DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
Grade 7: Salary £27,466 - £33,780 p.a.
The Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford is
seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to lead a research team as part
of the new Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis in Primary Care
(MaDOx). This is an exciting new research programme funded by the
National Institute for Health Research which has been set up in order to
improve the techniques and equipment that GPs use to diagnose clinical
conditions in GP surgeries and other NHS primary care settings.
One of the main components of the MaDOx Centre is to develop a
programme of horizon scanning to identify, prioritise and assess the
impact of new diagnostic health technologies relevant to primary care.
The Research Assistant will be expected to lead the research output of
the horizon scanning programme. This will involve coordinating the
process of horizon scanning and producing reports of identified
technologies in the priority disease areas. The work team will initially
be focussed on four main clinical areas: cardiovascular disease
(including diabetes), cancer, infection and child health. The postholder
will also contribute to the dissemination of research findings via peer
reviewed publications and presentations at national conferences. The RA
will need to work in collaboration with Departments of Primary Health
Care, Engineering Science, and Health Economics and a dedicated
Information Specialist at Oxford University, together with the
Department of Primary Care and the National Horizon Scanning Centre at
Birmingham University, as well as other national organisations such as
the HTA.
The successful applicant will possess the abilities to write up results
of analyses and contribute to peer-reviewed papers and reports for
sponsors, work to tight deadlines, manage and prioritise their own
workload, and develop new skills where needed (e.g. in systematic
reviews). Excellent interpersonal and highly developed IT skills are
also important for this position.

SENIOR MEDICAL STATISTICIAN/EPIDEMIOLOGIST, DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY
HEALTH CARE
Grade 8: Salary £34,793 - 41,545 p.a.
The Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford is
seeking to appoint a Senior Statistician/Epidemiologist to work with the
Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis (MaDOx).
The Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis in Primary Care is a new
research programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research.
The £3.5m in funding will be used to study the monitoring of chronic
diseases in primary care, including the monitoring of patients on
anticoagulation therapy and conditions such as hypertension, heart
failure, diabetes and asthma. With increasing numbers of patients with
chronic diseases, more research is needed into how to monitor these to
ensure that patients are receiving the optimal treatment. The Centre is
also funded to increase diagnostic accuracy and efficiency aiming to
identify important problems in the way diagnoses are made in primary
care, improve the use of exi
sting techniques, and develop new
technologies.
The post will be funded for three years in the first instance. The
postholder will work under the supervision of the University Lecturer in
Medical Statistics, Dr Rafael Perera.
The postholder will be expected to provide statistical leadership and
support to a multidisciplinary team of researchers within the centre.
Other responsibilities will include:
Statistical support for external grant applications
Development of new methods for Clinical Prediction Rules and
determining the adequate frequency for monitoring
Development of own programme of research
Dissemination of research findings via peer reviewed publications and
presentation at national and international Conferences
Teaching statistical/epidemiology methods to students on the MSc in
Evidence Based Health Care
Curriculum development for medical students as well as MSc students
Supervision of postgraduate students and clinical research fellows
Provision of training in statistical methods to staff
Supporting the University Lecturer in medical statistics in the
administration and smooth running of the department.
Applicants should have a PhD in a related subject with experience in
medical statistics and/or epidemiology. The successful applicant will
possess the ability to manage and organise research programmes, working
both independently and as part of a growing team. Excellent
interpersonal and highly developed IT skills are also important for this
position.
