Subject: Clinical Governance forum launched (27/12/98)

Dear Colleague
I am pleased to announce the launch of the Doctors.net.uk Clinical
Governance Forum. Created to meet the demand for peer-led discussion of
this important initiative the forum can be found in the Forums section at
http://www.doctors.net.uk. You will find three drop-down menus of forums
here and the CG forum is in the "other" menu.
It is hoped that the forum will provide a common area for the discussion of
all issues related to Clinical Governance - whether it be medical
management, teaching, post-graduate training, CME or CPD. Recognising the
multi-profession nature of clinical governance, we will shortly be able to
allow members of other professions allied to health-care to contribute to
this forum.
You will notice when you join the forum that it is currently managed by
myself, as Medical Director of Doctors.net.uk. This is a stop-gap until
somebody steps forward who would like to manage the forum. It is important
to explain that I will only be managing access to the forum and not in
anyway editing the postings (unless CG provokes extreme obscenities!).
Controlling access to the forum is merely to create an additional level of
confidentiality to allow free discussion.
Very many members of Doctors.net.uk have asked for this forum to be set up
and I hope it proves useful for those seeking answers to questions,
opinions from their peers on local ideas, for National discussion of
central initiatives or even just to say what you don't like about Clinical
Governance. However the challenge for all forums is to get people to speak
- with 90% of forum users being readers and only 10% contributing! Please
can I therefore encourage you to post a message when you first visit the
forum, even if only to introduce yourself to current forum members and
explain your particular interest in Clinical Governance. It will otherwise
be like a party at which all the guests have common interests but no one
will start a conversation!
Finally, we have had support from the Department of Health for this
initiative and I suspect that it may prove another (and rather direct)
channel for communication back to London.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me by
email or phone (01235 862788).
I would be grateful for all comments and suggestions for improvements, not
only for the Clinical Governance forum, but for Doctors.net.uk in general
as we continue to develop the service.
With best wishes for a happy - and discussive - New Year.
Yours sincerely
Neil Bacon MRCP
