To refine my previous questions:
1. Assuming that "muti" and similar practices, sometimes involving
murder, do go on in some areas in southern Africa, is there any
particular reason to suppose the "Adam" murder doesn't fit part of this?
2. In what sense does Washington represent these practitioners?
3. Why would we assume any sort of consistent orthodoxy?
