Local usage in South Africa, is from the Zulu word *umuthi* which means
medicine. It's usage is so widespead that even many non-Zulu folk use the
shortened *muti* for over-the-counter medicine - in indigenous societies,
however, muti refers to traditional medicine coming from a traditional
healer. This medicine can comprise of herbs, bark, shrubs, leaves, bone,
blood, skin etc. Muti murders are murders that are suspected to have been
carried out in order to obtain such ingredients.
