When I was a Physiology undergraduate, my research project was on eye movements. We found that eyes tend to 'wobble' preferentially in the directions "out and up","down and in" - which makes sense, as these are the directions in which we consciously move our eyes when we look from a near object to a far object.
Funnily enough, this ground breaking work was never published....
