Colleagues
It was a very sad day but the emergency services came up trumps after the
horrendous rail crash, this morning. BTW I was on the phone the night
before and discussing the hospital where a major number of the casualties
were taken, with an ex-colleague. There are moves afoot to downgrade it to
a MIU. However as was shown today it covers a vital stretch of the road and
rail networks and has a vital role to play even to this day.
In the wake of this as well as other major incidents should this rush for
major trauma centres at the expense of busy DGH's be revisited. The
argument has not been proved to me and would the results have been worse if
there was not the full accident services at Pontefract. I know there is a
strong vested interest from some quarters to close a large number of
accident units but I hve firmly opposed this. I know our unit has been
similarly threatened and we have had 4 significant rail crashed in my time.
