thanks for your answer. I do agree with you that "What is needed is an
inexpensive one-volume OPERE MINORI for classroom use, probably with just
English translations. For those (few) who desire their students to consult
the original text as well, perhaps a companion volume could be made
available".
This seems to be the solution, provided that the volume is complete,
philologically accurate and well indexed. It is odd that such a book is
still among 'desiderata': 1. Dante is among the greatest authors of
humankind (each of his non-comedy works being an essential part of a
complex system of intratextual references); 2. English is the international
language, and, paradoxically enough, such book would be useful also in
Italy, where most Italian University students don't know Latin at all but
can read modern English.
So... let's work!
