Dante's Monarchia, translated, with a commentary, by Richard Kay.
Studies and Texts, no. 131.
Toronto: Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, 1998.
ISBN: 0082-5328; 131>
Publisher's address: 59 Queen's Park Crescent East,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2C4
This is a hardback edition, that sells for about $90 (alas!). It would be a
good idea if PIMS issued an "editio minor" in paper at an affordable cost
for students. If PIMS did, it is doubtful that the Latin text would be
retained - unless potential users tell them to do so.
It should be noted that the hardback version of Shaw's translation also
contains her emended Latin text on facing pages; the price, however, is
prohibitive for classroom use. ISBN: 0 521 48272 0 hardback
What is needed is an inexpensive one-volume OPERE MINORI for classroom use,
probably with just English translations. For those (few) who desire their
students to consult the original text as well, perhaps a companion volume
could be made available. A worthy project for the Dante Society of America!
