Conventional sample size calculations are based on the assumption that
variables other than those under scrutiny are equally distributed in both
groups. So - how can we do sample size calculations that account for the
risk of type 1 errors? Would we need prior information on the frequency
distribution of potentially confounding variables in the population? Is it
possible, or is the only way case controls? Can anybody help with this?
