The primary sources that always come first to my mind are works of art.
One interesting example is found in the catacomb of Priscilla painting
of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the three men in the fiery furnace.
Flying above their heads is a bird with a piece of vegetation in its
mouth. Stokstad has suggested that this could be a branch of either
olive or laurel. If this were to be interpreted as the former and the
bird as the dove of the holy spirit, it could represent an act of divine
fireproofing or extinguishing.
