| Thank you all for your helpful answers to my questions
| regarding false prophets in the fourteenth century. I
| have followed some of your suggestions regarding
| particular books, and I am reading more about the
| subject at the moment.
|
| I wonder if anyone has yet thought of synonyms for
| 'false prophets'; any language would do...

Sorry to bring up Henry of Ghent again (pace Pater Oriens), but if I
remember correctly, he argues that proper theologians work not
within the context of _in via_, nor even _in patria_ , but rather in _in
raptu_, ie, in a prophetic manner. Not surprisingly, the only
theologian Henry could think of who worked this way was himself.
The rest, those who disagreed with him, were clearly false prophets
in this sense. So I guess you could say that theologian is a
synonym for false prophet, in a very strict sense. :-)
Cheers
Jim
