HEWITT HAILS CHEAPER INTERNET CALLS
E-commerce and Small Firms Minister Patricia Hewitt today welcomed
BT's new range of internet tariffs for libraries, colleges and
Citizen Advice Bureaux.
Ms Hewitt said:
"This is excellent news. BT's announcement means that even more
people will have access to the internet. This is vital if we are to
realise our vision of making the UK the best place to do e-commerce
by 2002."
From April next year, 527 Further Education Colleges, 4,300 public
libraries and 785 Citizens Advice Bureaux will be able to save more
than 50% on standard charges for internet access. Under BT's proposed
Public Institution Internet Caller package these bodies will enjoy
unlimited daytime Internet access for #600 per year or #1,200 for a
higher speed ISDN line. Evening or weekend access will be available
for an additional #150.
Several other companies, including Energis, NTL and Telewest are also
planning to offer special tariff packages for certain public
institutions. Kingston Communications already do so for libraries in
the Hull area. Under their license conditions BT's offer is subject
to approval by OFTEL who will publish their consultation today.
