I suspect part of the problem with Herbert is that the period when he
was bishop - 1090-1119 - is really just before charter output began
to take off in a major way. East Anglia is also a very odd area in
terms of surviving written materials because it is very poorly
recorded until c.1100 (even though we know, e.g. from Domesday and
from archaeological excavations, that it was - relatively speaking -
both populous and wealthy).
Good starting points within the diocese of Norwich are C.
Harper-Bill, ed. English Episcopal Acta, vi: Norwich 1070-1200
(London, 1990), B. Dodwell, ed. The Charters of Norwich Cathedral
Priory, 2 vols., Pipe Roll Soc. n.s. 40, 46 (1974, 1985), and I.
Atherton, E. Fernie, C. Harper-Bill and H. Smith, ed. Norwich
Cathedral: Church, City and Diocese, 1096-1996 (London and Rio
Grande, 1996), which has a chapter on Herbert by Deirdre Wollaston
and much else of interest besides.

Comrades,
I am trying to find material to follow up from 'The Life Letters and
Sermons of Bishop Herbert de Losinga' ed & trs by E. M. Goulburn & H.
Symonds (Oxford 1878). I would be interested in materials both in
terms of other studies of these texts or placing them in the wider
sphere of letter and sermon writing in twelfth-century England.
I am sure that I am being dull-headed, but am finding very little, if
anything to go on.
Any suggestions gratefully received and I thank you in advance for
your time and patience.
Duncan Givans
