I am working on a project to establish a Lifelong Learning Centre within
York Central Library. This will consist of 20 pcs with the Office suite of
software, Internet, e-mail facilities and CD-ROMs. We are also extending
the provision of pcs in some branch libraries. We hope to encourage public
use of computers and the Internet and will provide learning packs, videos
and cassettes within the Lifelong Learning Centre. I would be grateful to
hear from anyone who has already set up similar facilities particularly with
regard to the following:
1. How have you staffed your Centres, ie gradings of staff, duties
required, appointed new staff or used existing staff, etc?
2. What training did you give staff?
3. Who uses your Centres primarily? Have you targeted groups of people,
eg returners to work, over 50s, unemployed?
4. How have you prevented computer misuse, eg saving to floppy disk only,
use of firewalls, monitoring Internet access etc?
5. What sort of problems you have encountered during the setting up of the
facilities and after opening.
Any information greatly appreciated. Will summarise responses to list.
