Project: Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) & National
Service Frameworks in the South West Region
**************************************************
TWO POSTS
1. Research Associate GRADE: RA1A
1. Database manager/Programmer GRADE: 2
The Department of Social Medicine is looking to appoint two
people to lead this three year project using routine data
sources to support healthcare evaluation and monitoring in
the South West region.
The aim of this project is to examine the use of routine
data to monitor the quality, consistency and access of
services to the population of the South West region against
recommendations from National Service Frameworks on heart
disease, cancer, mental health, diabetes and health of
older people.
The Department of Social Medicine and MRC Health Services
Research Collaboration (HSRC) have access to an extract of
Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data for all of England.
This is the major source of routine information on the use
of NHS hospitals. HES data will eventually be available for
a ten year period (1991/2-2000/01). Data for the seven
years 1991/2-1997/8 are currently available with records on
over 73.5 million hospital episodes.
Analysis of this dataset, and other routine statistics,
will form the basis of a series of reports on services in
the South West region.
The project team (Research Associate, Database manager,
Professor Shah Ebrahim, Dr Yoav Ben-Shlomo and Dr Steven
Oliver)will be working closely with health service planners
at the NHSE South West Regional Office to make
recommendations for services.
