- after falling into sin, she repented and lived disguised as a
man among the desert monks of the Thebaid
* Paphnutius, bishop (c. 350?)
- a supporter of St Athanasius, he survived many years after
suffering the torture of having his right eye removed and his left leg
made lame
* Patiens, bishop of Lyon (c. 480)
- patiently worked as a model bishop: 'holy, active, ascetic and
merciful'
* Deiniol, bishop (c. 584?)
- known as the 'Daniel of the Bangors', he was buried at Ynys Ynlli
* Peter of Chavanon (1080)
- as a priest, he longed for a less active life; when he was
'persecuted by the attentions of a woman who was attracted to him', he
