Dear chums
I am offering, through the Continuing Education Department at York
University, a course entitled "The Latin Bible". This course will taught in
the King's Manor, York, on 10 Monday evening, 7-9 pm, beginning on 17th
January 2000. My blurb reads as follows:
"The text, history and literature of the Latin Bible: for over one thousand
years the Latin Bible was the only bible in use in the West. This course
examines, first, the Hebrew and Greek Bibles from which the Latin Bible was
translated; considers the work of St Jerome as Reviser and Translator;
traces the history of the text from the fourth century to the sixteenth;
discusses the quality of the latinity of the vulgate; and introduces the
student to patristic and medieval exegesis of the Bible."
A modest programme, you will agree. You may attend this course by writing
to the Centre for Continuing Education, The University of York, Heslington,
York YO10 5DD, mentioning course no. Y99020EC and enclosing a mere pittance
of £35; or you can phone them at 01904 434620.
However, I write to crave, not your pittance, but your help. I would
welcome any suggestions for teaching the course, which at the moment remains
a mere half-warmed fish in my mind.
Also, I intend to produce my own posters and flyers to advertise this
course. I would be grateful if members could suggest online material I
could download; eg text pages of illuminated Bibles, such as Amiatinus or
Lindisfarne. Friends, fellow list-members, lend me your URLS.
Oriens.
