What's the implied chronology here for waxing and waning?
And as I'm sure you appreciate, the size of Chartres as a diocese meant that
the cathedral church was bound to be a pilgrimage centre for an extensive
territory of lay people and parish priests intent upon worshipping at the
mother church. Hence: local and regional pilgrimage...but hardly in the same
league as Mont-Saint-Michel (although Christopher may well disagree).
