One of my earliest church memories (1940s) is the formula at the end of
pastoral letters:
"Cyril, by the Grace of God and in favour of the Apostolic See, Archbishop
and Metropolitan."
Said Cyril was the then Arcbishop of Southwark. Southwark is a relatively
small place though it is now the name of one of the 32 London Boroughs.
The Diocese (or Archdiocese if you must [shudder]) of Southwark covers
London South of the Thames and the counties of Surrey and Kent.
To be a little medieval I think someone set off on a journey from Southwark
and wrote up a travelogue with anecdotes.
Regards
Steve
(Blimey! the traffic increases when students are off on their own
peregrinations.)
