9 - 12 September 1999 at the Conference Centre, University of
Glasgow.
A note for your diaries.
The combined booking brochure for both the events above will be
dropping through your doors in the next week to 10 days. In the
meantime here is the theme and speakers for the Map Curators' Group
Workshop. I will put up the BCS Symposium details when I retrieve
them from my folder at present residing at home.

Map Curators' Workshop Thursday 9 September 1999
14:00 - 18:00 to Friday lunchtime 10 September 1999
"Approaching 2000: the new dawn or the dark ages?"
In this workshop map curators will address the continuing value of
paper map collections and the impact of digital developments.
Speakers include:
Tony Campbell, Map Librarian, the British Library. "What does 'the
digital future' really mean for map libraries?"
Chris Fleet, Secretary of LIBER and the National Library of Scotland.
"Map Curators and the European context"
John Moore, Map Librarian, the University of Glasgow. "The new
millennium and the university map collection: a view from the
sidelines"
Elizabeth Carmichael, Department of History and Topography, Glasgow
City Libraries, the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. "The peoples' map"
Charles Withers, Professor of Geography, University of Edinburgh.
"Knowing one's needs".
Adequate time is allowed for discussion, argument, etc, etc. which
will be chaired by Charles Withers.
On Thursday evening there is a reception for the launch of The Times
Comprehensive Atlas of the World Millennium Edition (Harper Collins.
The venue has still to be arranged.
The Technical visit on Friday morning 10 September will be to Harper
Collins Cartographic at Bishopriggs, Glasgow.
The registration fee for the Workshop covers the cost of the bus for
this visit and to the reception for the Millennium atlas launch.

A further note - You do not have to be a member of the British
Cartographic Society to attend either the Map Curators' Group
Workshop or the British Cartrographic Society Annual Symposium.
There are however reduced registration fees to both the Workshop and
the Symposium for members.
