Ingegerd - I found some interesting refs by going into the mailbase archive
and keying in caves. It's not really my field but I thought other list
members might be interested. We have had messages and offers of papers from
people interested in cave hermits and monasteries and the veneration of
holy wells in caves, as well as something on caves in Picturesque garden
design. A colleague who has been visiting the Holy Land saw a number of
holy sites based on caves. Altars seem to have been placed on top, in many
cases
giving rise to an arrangement similar to that of basilicas in
Europe with the relics in a crypt also beneath the altar.
Did you see my message about the TAG session in Cardiff next December on
ritual space?
