I have a copy of "The Scottish Students' Song Book" (incorporating "War
Songs of the Germans" by J.S.B. [no relation] - Edinburgh, 1870) given to
me by my brother and sister-in-law Christmas 1976 (they were both Edinburgh
graduates!) and "Gaudeamus (Igitur)" is the first item (arranged by Sir
Herbert S. Oakley, LL.D., Mus.Doc., 1876 [ who he? -ed.]).
The St Andrews University song is, of course, "Carmen Seculare" - words by
the Rev. Lewis Campbell, M.A., LL. D., Em. Prof., Univ.St.Andr (whom God
Preserve, etc etc). This song was orchestrated by the said Sir HS Oakley,
to whose presence at the Annual Concert there is an allusion in verse 5,
for the St Andrews University Music Society).
What was the original question? Is it time for a sumer is a comin in
recess?
P.S. My preferred version of GI is that in the "Academic Overture" by
Brahms.
