I'm wondering if the ".. Remensi archiepiscopo, sancte Romane ecclesie
cardinali, apostolice sedis legato..." in Herwig Weigl's wonderfully
informative post (<PL 215, 634ss., n. 69) answering Jim Bugslag's interesting
query might *possibly* be William "White Hands" son of the Count of
Chartres/Champagne, uncle of Philip Augustus, former Bishop of Chartres
(1165-68); Papal Legate from at least 1168(?); Archbishop of Sens (1168-76);
Cardinal-priest of Ste. Sabina from 1179???
My imperfect on-line notes suggest that he died in 1202, but, being
long-separated from my reference sources (and unable to locate even the
bare-bones equivalent of Gams on the Infirmation Suppereyeweigh), I'm
wondering if I could have mistakenly entered the date of the death of
this facinating character, and who this "Archbishop of Reims, cardinal of the
Roman church and Legate of the Apolstolic See" in 1205 might have been?
Sorry to trouble the list; the coincidence with Jim's major interest combined
with my idle curiosity and just seemed too much to pass.
My best to all and special thanks to Herwig Weigl for her rapid reply to an
interesting question,
CC
