Cambridge MS 139 sounds, offhand, like an incomplete reference - are
you sure you haven't missed out the name of a college? The Cambridge
University Library MSS mostly seem to begin with a big letter
followed by a small one, Gg or similar.
The various Cambridge MSS collections are mostly quite fully
catalogued - M.R.James the ghost story writer did a lot of them.
Is the Letter not included in the Corpus Christianorum (Cont. Med.)
volume of Ailred's writings? You should find a full MS description in
it, or at least information about where to find it.

First, thanks to all who responded to my requests for information
on childbirth miracles involving the Virgin Mary. In connection
with the same project, i now need to find out as much as possible
about the manuscript
Cambrige MS 139, fols. 149r-151v. (a letter of ailred of reivaulx
concerning the nun of watton). I believe i have been fairly
successful in locating relevant secondary literature, but would
like to find out more about the ms. itself (what else is in it,
for example.) my query, therefore, is twofold:
1) what catalogue should i consult in order to find a description,
location, etc. of this ms? (I'd really like to have a look at it
one day, if i ever get to cambridge)
2) is there any sort of catalogue of manuscript use (i.e. a list
of publications in which a given ms. is mentioned) which would
include this ms?
thanks in advance,
Margaret Cormack [log in to unmask]
