Dear colleagues,
thank you very much for your answers concerning the term "age of faith" for
the middle ages, and,corresponding, "age of reason" for the 17/18th century.
So the earliest example seems to be the book by Thomas Paine (+1809). I
would have guessed rather Voltaire or perhaps even Gibbon. Neither Durant
nor Fremantle (whose books I have on my shelf) give any information from
whence they took this title. However: Can one be convinced, that the
original expression really was English and not French or even German?
