Dear List: TThe opinions of RI Moore and that other excellent person who
pointed out how Bernard of Clairvaux tarred opponents by ascribing ancient
heresies to them are undoubtedly true. But it is also true that the
dualist principles expressed in medieval Catharism derive from a basic
cast of mind characteristic of Christianity and other religions. Almost
anytime one looks at the Latin church, there are dualist traces or,
better, qualities to be found somewhere. Lastly, it seems to me that one
should really use terms like "heretic" and "heresy" with the implicit
understanding that they refer to "divergent belief," one diverging, that
is, from that of the majority or the constituted authorities in any given
