I believe that, before all the mystics, it was Thomas Aquinas who noted that
Christ suffered in all his five physical senses, in addition to his
_tristitia_ at the betrayal of his companions. Summa Theologiae pars 3a, q.
46, a.4. Later, several mystics, among them Heinrich Suso Richard Rolle,
Julian of Norwich and several others meditated on the specific sensibility
