Hello Everyone,
I've been inundated with requests for this so I think the simplest thing is
to post it to the list. It's a useful comment on lifelong learning as well
as public libraries - and remember, Michael Caine was identified as coolest
man alive (or something like that) by GQ magazine a couple of months ago!
Here we go.
General discussion about Caines childhood. Talking about the fact that when
his
father - a Billings Gate fish monger - died he had one and eleven pence
ha-penny
(about 9p in todays' money). They lived in a pre-fab and were very poor.
Parkinson
When you saw what happened to your father did that motivate
you?
Caine
It determined me to make something of myself
Parkinson
You were very bright - you were a Grammar School boy weren't
you?
Caine
Yes, I was a Grammar School boy, God knows how that
happened
Parkinson
Well you were bright. It's what freed a lot of our generation,
Grammar schools
Caine
Grammar schools freed a lot of people and the most important
thing, I got so angry the other day I was reading the paper and
they are closing libraries, they should be opening the bloody
things, cause that's where, I was at the library 5 days a week,
reading books, learning, learning, trying to find out what was
going on, and getting out and using my imagination. Now they are
closing public libraries, people should read.
(pause as Parkinson starts asking next question)
Caine (looking to
audience)
I sound like a politician for Christ's sake
Applause.
