Our Evidence Based Practice course is now ready to start
signing up students! The course, which is offered via the
continuing professional development scheme of Exeter
University, starts in April 1999 and is aimed at
professions allied to medicine as well as nurses, midwives
and health visitors. It is a basic introduction to EBP and

Module : Introduction to Evidence Based Practice - for
Nurses, midwives, health visitors and the Professions
Allied to Medicine.
Credit Value: 20 credits at Level: 5/6 (M)
Pre-requisites: Qualified health professional
Access to the Internet and e-mail essential
Duration of Module: 10 weeks part-time
Rationale: The module aims to introduce the principles,
methods and application of Evidence Based Practice (EBP).
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the concepts of EBP
2. Examine and evaluate the key resources for EBP
3. Identify a clinical question and apply the methods of
searching for the evidence
4. Critique and analyse the evidence using appraisal
criteria
5. Apply the use of evidence as a tool for guiding
practice and service development
Teaching / Learning Methods:
Teaching is by distance learning, delivered electronically.
There will be 5 units of study accessed through the Web and
supported by readings. Each unit will involve
approximately 9 hours work, including exercises using
electronic resources. Electronic group tutorials.
Critical and analytical skills are developed through
interactive exercises, reflection, tutorials and
assignments. Skills in searching resources and appraising
them are also developed.
Contact Hours: 5 units @ approximately 9 hours plus group
tutorials approximately 3 hours.
Assignments:
1 x 3,000 - 4,000 word project based on searching for and
applying the evidence to own field of practice

Unit 1 Introduction to Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
Background and definitions
The need for EBP for nurses and professions allied to
medicine Advantages and disadvantages of the EBP approach
Unit 2 Resources for EBP
The Cochrane Library and other database sources Other
resources including journals, newsletters, guidelines,
research registers, software, internet and e-mail resources
Unit 3 Searching the Evidence
Developing the clinical question
Electronic and hand searching methods
Search strategies and special methods including filters
Practical searching exercises
Unit 4 Appraising the Evidence
Selecting the best sources
Using appraisal criteria and checklists
Unit 5 Applying Evidence to Practice.
Examine ways to implement the evidence into everyday
practice including clinical guidelines and other outcomes
of the EBP process
