>I must say that I've never heard of the seamless robe of Christ
It is biblical. Cf John 19:23, "But the tunic was without seam, woven from
top to bottom; so they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast
lots for it to see whose it shall be."
A modern chasuble (the priest's vestment) is conceived of as a front and a
back, joined together by a seam running along the shoulders.
A medieval chasuble, on the other hand, was constructed as two long halves,
a left and a right, joined together by one long seam running down the
middle. This seam was concealed by the orphreys (stripes) thus presenting
the appearance of a seamless robe.
