As I understand it, the word was applied to shrines containing other
relics, after the case of St Martin's cape, as in the Sainte-Chapelle
in Paris, which held the relic of the crown of thorns. But I would
think that something called a chapel would have to have an altar (and
would have to be consecrated??), whereas a shrine might not necessarily
contain an altar.
I am by no means sure about this, but I would be interested to see what
others have to say.
