The University of Bristol is host to the EU Large-Scale Geochemical
Facility (Est. 1st April 1998) which is funded by the European
Commission Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme.
The facility contains a number of modern analytical instruments that
allow: major- and trace-element analysis of rocks and minerals (EMPA,
ICP-MS, ICP-AES); determination of B and Li isotopes (TIMS), Fe3+/Fe2+
(Mssbauer) and CO2 - H2O (Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectrometry);
and scanning electron microscopy with qualitative EDS. Analysis of
surfaces can be performed with Auger Electron, Secondary Ion Mass and
X-Ray Photoelectron Spectrometers. Four well-equipped experimental
geochemistry laboratories allow users to carry out investigations that
simulate a wide variety of geological conditions.
The aim of the Large Scale Facility programme is to fund visiting
scientists from institutions in EU countries who wish to use analytical
facilities.
All travel and subsistence expenses (except for UK researchers) and
free access are provided to applicants from EU countries and Iceland,
Israel, Liechtenstein and Norway. Visits are usually expected to last
between 1 and 4 weeks.
The next application deadlines are 15 March 1999, 15 June 1999 and 15
September 1999.
