Social Dynamics of the Prehistoric Central Mediterranean
Edited by Robert H. Tykot, Jonathan Morter & John E. Robb
(Accordia Specialist Studies on the Mediterranean 3)
Published by Accordia Research Institute, University of London
ISBN 1 873415 19 2
Social Dynamics of the Prehistoric Central Mediterranean has its origins in
two symposia held at Annual Meetings of the Society for American
Archaeology; papers from these symposia have been supplemented by
additional works. The volume presents original research on pre- and
proto-history of the Central Mediterranean, including Italy and the islands
of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, and Malta. Until recently archaeological
interest in the Central Mediterranean was limited to subsistence,
chronology, and culture history, often viewing the area in relation to
earlier, Eastern Mediterranean developments. After several decades of
environmental and socially oriented research, the data exist from which
social information may be derived. Furthermore, the dynamic, rather than
static, nature of human society is seen as central to understanding the
development of behavioural sub-systems including environmental
exploitation, resource manipulation, gender, ideological and kin relations,
and evolving social asymmetries.
