Having recently made my first visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum I'm
interested in learning more about life in both these cities before their
destruction.
I found the information available at both sites deficient in many ways. A
visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum added little to the experience.
It seems to me that a wonderful and unique opportunity to interpret and
display aspects of an ancient world has been poorly handled, to say the
least. A travelling exhibition which reached Australia some years ago gave
a better insight into Pompeiian life than I found at the site itself. A
good deal of the responsibility for this must lie with those who pillaged
the site and carted artifacts and murals off to distant museums and private
collections.
Can members of this list suggest books which may help me to fill in the
gaps? I'm looking for a book or books which contain recent information,
which are well and authoritatively written and illustrated with photographs
of artifacts which are no longer evident to the site visitor. A combination
of academic authority with insight into the lives of the people, from the
graffiti on the walls to their religious beliefs, politics, culture and
art, would be ideal.
