We normally have a good working relationship with the local police/CID.
They will ring up to enquire after particular samples as soon as they
can, and, provided that all the necessary formalities have been
satisfied, the samples can be released.
Samples for the coroner pose no problem.
We occasionally have a few (usually inexperienced) policemen try it on
with junior members of staff - they are sent away, often with a flea in
their ear.
However, I think that it is time that there was perhaps some clear
guidance on this matter, as such requests seem to be increasing in
frequency.
