Good morning,
We currently have a patient with a striking resemblance to the one
presented by Geoff Whittaker:
Total protein = 138 g/L
Albumin = 16 g/L
Immunofixation: IgG lambda
(we do not quantitate light chains)
We took the EDTA sample which had been at 4 C for one day, and
separated the plasma from the red cells. Although it was
somewhat viscous beforehand already, it was still liquid after one
night at 4 C. We do not have difficulties with our heparine gel
separator samples.
Unfortunately, I have no explanation to offer for this difference in
behaviour. Gel formation is a rather complex physico-chemical
process. I am afraid that the cost it would take to solve this
problem would be of little benefit to the patient.
Best regards
