SHIMR 99

The Fourth International Symposium on Health Information Management
Research Sheffield, England, 14-15th June, 1999.

Organised by: The Centre for Health Information Management Research, The
University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK

http://www.shef.ac.uk/~is/research/chimr/shimr99.html

*****************
CALL FOR PAPERS
*****************

SHIMR 99 aims to bring together people who are carrying out, or are
interested in, research in the general area of health information
management and technology, and to provide an informal forum for the
presentation and discussion of their research activities.

SHIMR is a response to the challenge of utilising the enormous potential
of modern information technology in information systems which benefit
healthcare professionals, managers, planners, patients and the public.
The multi-disciplinary field of Healthcare is a massive generator and
user of information. Effective management and exploitation of this
critical resource is fundamental to the effectiveness of all groups and
individuals in this field, at strategic, management and operational
levels. We therefore welcome paper submissions and delegates from the
international healthcare community, particularly those with
teaching/research responsibilities in health information management,
with clinical responsibilities, and those involved in provision of
information services.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Papers may be submitted reporting on research in any area of health
information management. Areas include, but are not restricted to,
Information Management issues of

Evidence based care
Person-based Electronic Health Records
Integrated healthcare through standards and infrastructure
Healthcare training and education
Information services for the public and patients
Security and confidentiality of healthcare information
Integration of Information Services

PUBLICATIONS

The Symposium Proceedings, including all full, short and discussion
papers presented, and abstracts for posters and workshops, will be
published by the Health Informatics Journal, Sheffield Academic Press.

In addition, we are arranging for selected papers to be published in
future issues of the Health Informatics Journal, as has occurred in
previous SHIMR events.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Full Papers - Contributors are required to submit an extended abstract
of between 1,000 and 1,500 words in English. Authors whose abstracts are
accepted will be invited to develop the abstracts into full papers of
not more than 5,000 words for presentation at the Symposium.

Short Papers - Contributors are required to submit an extended abstract
of between 500 and 750 words in English. Authors whose abstracts are
accepted will be invited to develop the abstracts into short papers of
not more than 2,500 words for presentation at the Symposium.

Discussion Papers - Contributors are required to submit an extended
abstract of between 300 and 500 words in English. Authors whose
abstracts are accepted will be invited to develop the abstracts into
position papers of not more than 1,500 words for group discussion at the
Symposium.

Posters - Posters sessions provide a forum for introducing work in its
early stages. Poster contributors are required to submit an extended
abstract of between 300 and 500 words in English, describing the problem
area, the work being carried out, and why the work is important. Authors
of accepted poster abstracts will be invited to make a short
presentation and to develop a poster presentation for display at the
Symposium.

Workshops - Workshops bring together participants to discuss selected
topics in an informal atmosphere designed to encourage discussion and
active exchange of ideas between researchers and practitioners. Workshop
proposers should include a clear statement of the workshop
topic/objectives, the intended audience, the proposed length (in hours),
an abstract (300 to 500 words), an outline of the contents, and a
description of the proposer's qualifications/experience in relation to
the workshop topic.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the Programme Committee,
chaired by Professor Tom Wilson, Director of the Centre for Health
Information Management Research. Each submission should contain
sufficient detail to permit reviewers to judge the suitability, and
should be accompanies by a completed submission form (see below).
Papers should not be simultaneously submitted elsewhere, or have been
previously published.
