Many thanks for your answer (and the other answers I have received).
Let me explain a little more about what I am planning to do an then ask some
more specific questions.
My map will be quite abstract (like the route maps you find in the back of
an AA book, or a London Underground map).
It will comprise of a number of points in France (which will be Electricity
Power Stations of various kinds) and paths between these points (power
cables and some road routes).
1 In the case of Hydro-electric power stations I would like to record
the height above sea level. I can get this information from an IGN map but
would I be infringing their copyright if I did so? If so, does any one know
what the cost of buying the right from them would be?
2 In many cases I can get the information I need by visiting the sites
(armed with a GPS and altimeter). In some cases the sites allow public
access for tours, visits etc. If I happen to record readings from my GPS
system while I am on their site would I in any way be committing a trespass?
A facility may grant the right for members of the public to visit
the site but does that implicitly give the right to make measurements that
are later used for mapping?
3 Does IGN have the same attitude to copyright as the OS (which as I
understand it is that if its a map of anywhere in the UK then it must have
been derived from their original source and therefore does infringe their
copyright)?
4 How consistent is copyright law across Europe right now (if this
project in France is a success then we may extend it to other European
countries).
Any answers or suggestions for how to get some answers to these questions
would be very much appreciated.
Regards
George James
