I have been asked by Fraser Norton to draw your attention to the
following meeting:
Would you please make the Tectonic Studies Group of the Geological
Society aware that there will be a workshop on ores and minerals
related rock-fluid interactions held under the auspices of the NERC
Micro-to-macro programme on 2 Dec 1998. Please see attached Word 6.0
document for details.
NERC Thematic Programme: Understanding the Micro-to-Macro Behaviour of
Rock-Fluid Interactions (µ2M)
Wednesday 2 December 1998
(9.30 to 12.30 am)
The Royal Society, London
Objectives
· To bring together researchers with expertise in minerals and ores
from the UK geo-science community and industry representatives that
are likely to be able to contribute to meeting the aims of the NERC
µ2M programme. · To encourage the formation of collaborative groups of
researchers that will submit multi-disciplinary and
multi-institutional research proposals to µ2M. · To encourage industry
participation in these research proposals.
Background
Only a small number of mineral and ore fluid flow related outline
proposals were submitted by UK research groups to the first call for
proposals for the NERC µ2M programme. The µ2M Steering Committee want
to encourage more applications in this area to the second call for
proposals. It is important that any proposals submitted are aligned
with the strategic aims of the µ2M programme and involve true
collaboration with other university groups and/or industry. This
workshop aims to provide guidance to researchers in this important
area and encourage them to submit new proposals in response to the µ2M
second call.
Structure
The workshop will be chaired by Professor Rob Knipe of the Department
of Earth Sciences at University of Leeds. Professor Knipe is a member
of the µ2M programme Steering Committee.
Researchers will be asked to give brief presentations on either their
current work, or proposed future work in the area of minerals and
ores. Key invited industry representatives will also present a
summary of their current research needs in this area.
The following general topics will also be discussed:
· Strategic objectives for the programme, and specifically for the
second call for proposals; · Multidiscipline approach to proposal
generation; · Industry needs in the area as a driver for proposal
preparation; · Getting industry involved in proposals/projects.
Attendance
Researchers interested in attending the workshop are invited to submit
a brief 100 word abstract of their proposed workshop presentation to
the µ2M Programme Manager by 30 October 1998. Abstracts can be
submitted in electronic form via e-mail (Word 6.0 compatible files
only), via post or via fax (contact details below). Places at the
workshop are limited to 20-25 delegates, so please respond promptly.
