I recently requested help from the list with Health needs assessment,
using rapid evaluation methods. I got a fantastic response!

Many thanks to all those who replied. Here is a summary. The paper is
almost completely drafted...

I hope that I have included all the sources:

Cheers

Lesley duff suggested

The Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau database which has
all kinds of handy references about anthropological/development type
issues. Psychlit and Sociofile are also handy dbases but available, I
think, through BIDS. You could also try CINHAL which is useful for
issues related to nursing, thus includes needs assessment.

'Listening to local voices' a paper from in BMJ was suggested by
Trish Greenhalgh

The book 'Researching the people's health' edited by Jennie Popay and
Gareth Williams (1994) (Routledge) has a good chapter on rapid
appraisal methodologies: 'Prioritizing needs with communities' written
by Bie Nio Ong and Gerry Humphris. Suggested Rena Papadopoulos

Pedro Gallo suggested
1.- Stevens and Raftery manuals. Health care Needs Assessment, in
Radcliffe Medical Press.
2.- Percy-Smith work on Needs Assessment and Public
Policy (1996-Oxford University Press).
3.- Many other titles are available from libraries including the
lastest by Soriano (1995) "Conducting Needs Assessments" in SAGE, or
Witkin&Altschuld (1995) "Planning and conducting needs assessment"
also in SAGE.

Rudy Zimmer suggested

main researchers in this area are stationed at Johns Hopkins
School of Public Health ( _ Gray, Carl Taylor, etc.).
There is a review in a medline journal under "rapid epidemiologic
appraisal" from the US and in the early 1990s.

[Other folks]First Nations people and CIDA (Canadian
International Development Agency) or CSIH (Canadian Society of
International Health). You may want to check the International Centre
or the Department of International Development (DID) at the University
of Calgary where they have done a considerable amount of PAR/RAP, etc
in Western Nepal and Gharwal (India).

Ronald Ingle suggests we try

Vicki Talor found an article that may help:
East Africa Medical Journal 1995: 72 (1): 15-18. It contains
referencs that may also be useful.

John Kevany suggested accounts of two of projects have been
published in ADMINISTRATION, the quarterly journal of the Institute
of Public Administration [IPA], Dublin.

[1994] vol. 42, no.2, pp.170-182. -

A book on Irish health services entitled: "Towards A Healthier
Future?",and a more detailled account of the peri-urban project
avaialable from the Department on request [contact Ailbhe Mealy: tel.
